We have a story from one of many friends that decided to make the big move to Costa Rica, and this is what he has to say when asked by International Living magazine:
Dear Reader,
“I had so many things I wanted to do in my life, but never had the time. Now I tinker around with house projects…make flavored brandy using the fruit that grows in my garden…raise animals…have parties…or just relax!”
John Michael (Mike) Arthur’s latest project is to design an aviary for the garden—which his handyman will spend a week building. Cost of labor? $150 total.
“I want it to be finished before my grandkids come visit during the holidays,” he smiles.
Mike looks calm and relaxed on our Zoom call, from his terrace in Costa Rica’s Orosi Valley
The trickle from the river flowing through his property competes with tropical birdsong in the background.
Surrounded by lush greenery, Mike is wearing short sleeves and sips an iced drink. Not bad for a February morning…
It’s a far cry from his days of commuting in the sweltering Dallas heat, where he worked in healthcare for over 30 years.
“Getting out of bed is easy when there’s sunshine and 75 degree weather waiting for you every day” he says.
“I couldn’t retire with this quality of life back in Dallas. I’d have had to keep working.
“Here, life is easy. I couldn’t be happier. I have the time and freedom to do all the hobbies I ever wanted to do. And I do it all for about a third what I was spending in the U.S.”
Mike spends his time meeting friends for lunch…entertaining… “we have a LOT more dinner parties here”…and enjoying his new hobbies.
“Life is magical here!” he laughs.
We also have David's story: Y’know, it’s like Hawaii here, but 5 times cheaper. Figure on $20 to fill your refrigerator with fresh fruit and veg. You can buy a lot in a beach town like Tamarindo for $40,000. Try finding that in Hawaii!
“In fact, Hawaii is like Costa Rica’s ugly stepsister.”
David Krueger agrees. A former nuclear engineer, he was sick of gruelling hours and spending weeks on the road. He was ready for a better lifestyle, in a country with good healthcare and a stable government.
After visiting a few countries, David says, “I decided Costa Rica is the best. Especially with 100% renewable energy and 25% reserved land. Plus, here in Costa Rica it is much healthier.”
David and his wife Nancy moved down in 2019…
David and Nancy found their dream home in Costa Rica’s Southern Zone
“Here we have no stress. I lost 15 pounds. My blood pressure is down. I eat real food. We have 40 pineapple plants and 15 fruit trees growing. We are also living on a lot less money.”
Mike…David and Nancy… These people are all different. But one thing brings them together. They wanted a better life—one that was more fulfilling, rich in new experiences, more in tune with who they wanted to be.
